OBJECTIVE OF GUEST LECTURE:
As a part of academic activity, a GUEST LECTURE was organized by the department of Pathology on 16 Feb 2018. The Topic for the Guest Lecture was “Anaemia”
About Guest lecture:
Dr. Suniti Sikund started her lecture with the introduction to Anaemia. She defined that anemia is a condition in which healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissues is reduced. Having anemia may make you feel tired and weak.
She described the different causes of anaemia and different forms of anemia, each with its own cause. Anemia can be temporary or long term, and it can range from mild to severe. Thus it can be a warning sign of serious illness.
Anemia is very difficult to detect because the symptoms are general. In her lecture she focused about the diagnostic evaluation of anaemia. She briefed a series of laboratory test to diagnose anemia, medical and family history is very important, physical examination is done, and following tests are run- Complete blood count (CBC), the levels of the red blood cells contained in the blood (hematocrit) and the hemoglobin.
At the end she highlighted that anemia more often than not may be diagnosed by clinical features alone. A simple blood test is usually not enough to confirm the diagnosis of the condition. Under the microscope the RBCs may appear smaller and paler or other sizes and shapes. The blood smear test is a very important tool to diagnose the conditions.
Conclusion:
Dr. Suniti Sikund has covered all the clinical aspects for the evaluation of anaemia. Her presentation was self explanatory and with good clarity.
